K zabránění progrese onemocnění je důležitá včasná diagnostika a zahájení terapie. Zvláštní pozornost bychom proto měli věnovat osobám, u kterých se vyskytne Raynaudův fenomén, otoky prstů charakteru „puffy fingers“ a u kterých byla zjištěna pozitivita antinukleárních protilátek.
